Understanding the 2025 Air Conditioning Changes: What You Need to Know
In 2020, the American Innovation & Manufacturing (AIM) Act was signed into law, mandating a shift to new refrigerants for residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps. This change will take effect in 2025, and here’s what you need to know.
A Brief Background
Your current air conditioning system likely uses either R22 or R410A refrigerant. R410A replaced R22 due to its lower environmental impact, but it still has a high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 2088. To further reduce environmental harm, manufacturers will need to adopt new A2L refrigerants like R454B or R32, which have a much lower GWP (750 or less) starting January 1, 2025.
Why Should You Care About This?
Environmental Impact: The new refrigerants are designed to be more eco-friendly, reducing the environmental impact of air conditioning systems.
System Redesign: Manufacturers are overhauling their equipment to work with the new refrigerants, and this will drive up production costs.
Cost Impact: HVAC companies will need to buy new tools and equipment to service these updated systems. As costs increase for manufacturers and distributors, they will likely pass these increases down to consumers. This could mean higher prices for air conditioners and heat pumps in 2025.
